Bad news: A major vulnerability has been disclosed for the technology that powers encryption across the majority of the internet. That includes Tumblr. Our team took immediate action to fix the issue, but you should still take some time to change your password, not only here but on any other sites you visit.
You should also strongly consider enabling two-factor authentication. It’ll go a long way to ensure that no one besides you can access your account. Thanks, and take care.
I want more women in the industry period — on the page and at the drawing board and keyboard. But it’s not important to me that women write female-led books.
That’s dangerous thinking. It suggests a limit to the empathy of the creator.
As for who I want to write a Spider-Woman book? Well… *me*. But chances are that someone else will be available first and though I will writhe with jealousy, that’s great — because it’ll mean I get to read a Jessica Drew solo book and how great is that?
In response to numerous queries about future books, I’ve added a page to the sidebar for announced and current projects. There are currently only three to list - EXILE (Numair’s book), an untitled Circle universe novel featuring Tris, and a book about Maura of Dunlath.
The page will be updated as future projects are announced, and I will cross-post any changes to this page.
I considered making action figures but they would never be able to be sold separately and the Gansey one would only have strong handshake action and the Noah one would have to be made of that glow in the dark stuff(?) which seems expensive to manufacture and the Adam figure would have breakable parts that frustrated everyone who tried to play with it and the Ronan figure would have too many sharp edges to even take out of the packaging and the Blue one would always be getting lost because it was so much smaller than the others.
And I mean, what else is there? WHAT ELSE.
This ask comes as I am angrily scuffling through my iTunes like I’m digging through a closet — where is the tune I need for this scene? WHERE? NONE OF THESE SEEM TO WORK. THRASH. THRASH! LET’S SHOP FOR SOME MORE MUSIC BECAUSE I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR TONIGHT.
The only nonnegotiable thing is mood. I can ignore completely inappropriate lyrics if the mood is perfect. I write to a lot of instrumental music, and a lot of Irish music, but that’s because I grew up playing it and listening to it so it doesn’t read “ethnic” to me.
Mood + lyrics is the magical combination, but that’s harder to find. Those are the songs I wear the hell out. It’s the reason why I have 182 plays on Beck’s “Turn Away” for Raven Boys III.
It is never just lyrics, no matter how appropriate they are. Readers will often send me songs and say “this sounds just like Adam!” — but they mean the lyrics. I can nod agreeably, but I can’t write to it, because I’m making my own words, so someone else’s appropriate words with an inappropriate mood will cause me to herniate my imagination.
Sometimes I need a different song for a scene at different points in the book, especially as I understand the scene better. One of my favorite scenes that I’ve ever written is the Congressional party in The Dream Thieves. The first time I drafted it, I listened to “Can’t Touch It” by Ricki-Lee, which is a sort of kitschy dance number, because I needed noise in this party, the idea of a hectic and superficial and retro performance (why yes my father ran for Congress why do you ask). And then when I edited that scene, it was “The End’s Not Near” by Band of Horses, a very, very different song. I needed the mood and the lyrics of that one for Adam’s actual internal monologue.
I have my playlists sort of up on Soundcloud as I go along, but I feel badly pointing anyone to the RB III playlist because it is so very incomplete. So many songs from my playlist aren’t on Soundcloud, so I think it probably gives a very strange impression.
Finally, I can never tell if my musical taste translates entirely. If I post, say “Post Script" by Typhoon and say "this is Adam & Gansey in book 3," do people get anything from it? Hard to say. I want it to work, but I also feel very strongly about teasing and promising readers things without ever lying to or misleading them.
But I’m passionate about music — I play 6 (I refuse to count the ukulele) instruments and have music on in the house all the time — and so if nothing else, I do love when a reader adores a song I recommend.
(P. S. Absolute best reader recommendation EVER was when a reader sent me “Ribs Out” by F*ckButtons right when I was writing the K/R dreaming sequences in DT, so thanks for that, gentle reader — it was a nice break from Upsurt)
I AM SO ANGRY BECAUSE I’M LISTENING TO “POST SCRIPT” BY TYPHOON AND I’M SITTING HERE CRYING LIKE A BABY WHILE SCREAMING OVER CHAT TO companionintheimpala BECAUSE SHE’S CRYING OVER IT TO AND THIS IS NOT OKAY. BUT IT’S PERFECT AND I CAN’T DEAL WITH IT
